Discipleship and Orphan Camp Construction Project | Malawi, Africa

In April, Shannon and I had the great privilege of traveling to Malawi, Africa to lead our first KA Kids Summer Camp for 50 orphans. What a beautiful country full of wonderful people and eager hearts. We fell in love with their joy, humility and gentle spirits. The children we met need a place to grow, mature and learn about their God-given potential.

Don’t you remember summer camp?! I’m sure for you, like us, it was a time of fun, pulling us out of our comfort zones and marked moments of learning.

Would you consider partnering with us financially to provide a space for these orphans to have the same summer camp experience you did? If you have a few minutes, please read our story, below.

We now have our NGO (nonprofit) registered and finalized in Malawi! We have board members in Malawi that have been appointed! Our structural engineer has been reviewing the site and estimating the project scope. All the little details are quickly coming together. We see the Lord’s hand guiding and leading at every turn! He is SO GOOD!

We are so humbled to have Radiant Church in Kalamazoo come beside us in a huge way! They committed to funding nearly half of camp. We are blown away by their generosity.

I want to be a mother to the motherless. I feel sad when I see children living alone without their parents. I feel sad when I see children in the streets searching for food in the bins. I also want to be a secondary school teacher.

Our Story

We have led KA 2035 in Michigan serving the homeless and those in need in our community for 10 years.  We host a kids summer camp each year, mentor kids weekly and run several special events. It has been an honor to come alongside those in need to encourage, support and show them love and kindness.  Our goal has always been a local focus and never international missions.

Four years ago we had a pastor from Malawi stay with us. He saw what we did locally with KA 2035 and asked if we would partner with him and run a camp for orphans in Africa.  That began KA Malawi. Since that time, there have been seven orphan camps in Malawi funded by KA 2035. In April of this year, we had the honor of going to Africa and leading our first camp in Malawi with a team of 9.  What a privilege! Our lives were forever changed!  To see the orphans with nothing, yet so filled with joy; these beautiful kids marked us. The orphans are so different from what we see with our local kids. The lives of kids in the USA are filled with so many distractions. We felt called to serve and bless these orphans as they are so receptive, eager and passionate to learn and are genuinely thankful for any opportunity they are given.

As soon as we boarded the plane home, my husband and I began to talk about what we could do in Africa.  We both recalled how meaningful summer camp was for us when we were kids. We considered the additional opportunities that would be available if we had our own facility.  The camp site that KA currently uses in Malawi is booked most of the year and is difficult to reserve.  After talking about all the additional ways we could leverage a KA campground, the journey began.  Within 2 weeks, we sold my Jeep to help fund the purchase of the land on Lake Malawi.

We enter this new adventure with excitement, faith, the weight of the responsibility and the joy believing we will be able to train up many for generations to come. We are asking you to consider coming beside KA to help build a legacy that will far outlast us.  The camp will cost around $250,000 to build. We have spent all we have on the purchase of the land, but believe others will come beside us and partner with us in this vision. We are so honored to embark on this new chapter and hope you consider coming beside us.  Please keep the orphans and KA in your thoughts and prayers and thank you for taking time to hear our story.

Vision

Provide our guests with a marked moment in time that they will remember for the rest of their lives; a time where they can focus on and seek out what truly matters most in life.  Our goal is that each guest leaves with action steps for their life, purpose and legacy. Our program will be focused on discipleship, mentorship and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. The KA camps will target orphans of all ages, married couples and families.  In addition, we will be equipping and training ministry leaders so they are empowered, sharpened and encouraged to go out and make an impact on others. The camp site will serve as a training ground for the older orphans who are interested in working as teachers, cooks, maintenance personnel, management and ministry. When the camp site is not being used by KA, it will be rented out to other groups, all proceeds will go to assisting orphans in Africa.

We welcome any amount of donation and would ask that you prayerfully consider joining us in this Kingdom adventure.

Sincerely,

Shannon Myers
